We are editors. We are gatekeepers of all of the content that flows through our pipeline. We are ninjas of the timeline with a focus that has to be perfect. We are storytelling sages with a depth of knowledge of the Hero’s Journey (look it up). However, we are also expected to be technical wizards to the highest degree. With that expectation at such a high importance, we must hold ourselves accountable with proper handling of the media that we interact with.
Especially in today’s filmmaking world, we must be more aware and prepared to deal with the resources that we utilize to practice our craft. With that thought, we must devote time to learning about these resources. We have to devote our minds to the application of all aspects of media. It’s our responsibility as artists first, to handle our skills and tools with care so that we may produce work that satisfies our passion as storytellers.
With this great responsibility, comes a multitude of concepts for us to take hold of. We’re going to have to learn when and where to use ProRes codecs as opposed to h.264. We must know how to work with 8-10-12-bit color channels, proper sequence settings, and resolutions/frame dimensions. The knowledge of when to scale up and scale down an image is imperative to workflows in today’s post-production environment.
Those concepts are just the beginning. To learn more about those concepts in detail, well, just asking other editors and post-production professionals is a great way to start. The next best choice, and probably first most of the time, is our best friend Google. He/she is so kind to us. There’s never an excuse to not knowing at least a little information about how these concepts at least fit into a workflow. Now, if you haven’t been offered the opportunity to work with ArriRAW footage, you should at least know the potential of footage that power.
I could get into terminology of everything techy with post-production. However, that would take time. Time in which you could be researching and applying your new found knowledge! You just need to know, that as an editor, your responsibilities are no longer just focused on picture and sound editing. You’re now editing technology, and the media that comes from it.
