Oscars 2017: The Winners and Our Reactions

Some quick thoughts on last night’s Oscar ceremony:

  • We went 18 for 24 categories in our predictions, which is not great for us historically.
  • By our reckoning this is the first time the Best Picture consensus prediction lost since Crash won in 2005, or Shakespeare in Love in 1998.
  • However, unlike those two years, the superior film was selected by the Academy.
  • It’s a shame that the announcement became a huge debacle, but kudos to the La La Land folks for being gracious, especially  producer Jordan Horowitz.
  • I suspect that Moonlight winning will help the reputations of both it and La La Land. Barry Jenkins’ amazing film will get seen by many more people, and La La Land can exist as a really fun love story without the burden of being The Best Movie of the Year.
  • The broadcast itself seemed even more oddly paced than usual, and while Jimmy Kimmel was a decent host, trying to bring some of his late night bits to the Oscars’ was pretty much a bust, especially bringing in a tour bus of regular people. If you’re a fan of movies, why are you on a star tour during the Oscars?
  • The ultimate nadir of this was his vamping during the Best Picture confusion, which felt unneeded as well as disrespectful to everyone involved.
  • The Matt Damon stuff was all gold, however. Especially the We Bought a Zoo bit.
  • Favorite winner of the night? Kevin O’Connell finally winning for Sound Mixing.
  • Our menu this year:
    • “Chef’s Special” dippers with avocado/jalapeño sauce for Moonlight
    • Squid Ink pasta with a white wine sauce for Arrival
    • Shiner Bock Beer for Hell or High Water
    • Manchego by the Sea Salt Crackers for Manchester By the Sea
    • City of Stars espresso cookies for La La Land
