Scion A/V presents a free screening of New Garage Explosion!!: In Love with These Times this Thursday (4/28) at the Ritz East. The documentary examines the modern lo-fi garage rock movement and features musicians that you may know like Jay Reatard (RIP) and Hunx & His Punx (who played a packed show at KFN this past Thursday) as well as lesser known acts like Human Eye (who played an [unjustifiably] sparsely attended show at Danger Danger last fall) and Davila 666 (who killed it at Hong Kong Garden this past Friday). Other featured acts include Smith Westerns, The Dirtbombs, Magic Kids, Black Lips…you know the types. Scion have been major promoters of this scene for a few years now so their involvement doesn’t come as much of a surprise though the existence of the car manufacturer’s production company certainly does. I attended a Goodnight Loving/Reigning Sound show in Hoboken last summer where the latter band didn’t have any merchandise for sale, but gave out plenty of free Scion hats. As long as everyone’s happy…
Ticketing begins at 6:00 PM, screening starts at 7:00. We’d be there, but we will, of course, be attending International House’s Pop Cinema program that evening. No big loss though, you can watch New Garage Explosion!! in its entirety online for free.
