International Ocean Film Tour Comes to Philly

The International Ocean Film Tour is making its fourth trip around the globe, bringing audiences the best in ocean adventure and environmental documentaries. This time around, Philly is playing host to this one night only event at the URBN Annex Screening Room at Drexel University on Friday, December 1st. The unique presentation will feature 7 films (around 120 minutes total), packed with inspirational stories and the best water sports action of the year.

From the trailers alone, this looks like an impressive lineup of beautifully shot short films (I’m particularly digging Johanna Under the Ice and The Accord. What is it about frozen landscapes?). Take a closer look at each below!

This year’s films include:

The Weekend Sailor
An amateur sailor, a stuffy English yacht race, and a stunned public watching. This film tells the story of Ramón Carlín, an inexperienced Mexican sailor who found himself a contender in the first Whitbread Round The World Yacht Race.

Shorebreak – The Clark Little Story
From surfer to photographer, native Hawaiian Clark Little portrays the power of the ocean through the lens of his camera.

The Accord
Iceland hardly comes to mind as a surfer’s paradise, but for Heiðar Logi Eliasson the beauty of the this land as well as its ferocity prove otherwise.

The Legacy
After its habitat was destroyed in the Gulf of California, the pacific manta ray was forced to find a new home in a Mexican archipelago. This documentary shows the resilency of nature as well as humanity’s role in preserving its existence.

Johanna Under the Ice
Follow Finnish freediver Johanna Nordblad as she plunges in subzero degree water and discovers her love of the silence under the ice.

Chapter One
This documentary takes a look at Kiteboarding, the new board sport that grew out of Windsurfing, with footage of the best places to take flight around the world.

A Plastic Ocean
Connecting the influx of micro plastics in the ocean to humanity’s consumerism, filmmaker Craig Leeson asks the question, what must we do to protect our oceans?
